Late Trading “After Party”

The S&P 500 and the Russell 2000 succeeded in recording light gains yesterday, the NASDAQ, though, lagging behind. It was primarily a waiting game, players eagerly anticipating the most important earnings numbers of the quarter. Stocks traded mixed for most of the day, the response to the interest rate decision of the European Central Bank (ECB) lacking, though, in way of substance. That notwithstanding, the big numbers released after closing are going to inject a measure of enthusiasm into Wall Street today.

Both Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOGL) outstripped their earnings forecasts, trading sharply up in late trading: AMZN jumped 7.5%, GOOGL rallying 2.8%. Apparently, the sharp movement in AMZN can also be attributed to short traders who had to cover their positions. Of late, the stock had struggled, experiencing negative movement. It would seem, yesterday, that it caught a number of bears off-guard.

Intel (INTC), which was already stretched on the eve of its earnings release, continued climbing another 2.2% in late trading, after raising its forecast. Microsoft (MSFT) soared 4.5% in late trading to a new all-time high.

These abovementioned reports are going to strengthen the confidence players have in the FAANG stocks; of late, the take on them had turned sour. This renewed optimism, now, is likely to spill over to the rest of the market.

Our market needs some more emotion. If AMZN, GOOGL, and MSFT don’t get the job done, it’s hard to imagine what can. Bulls, today, are going to pounce with a lot of enthusiasm after the movement in yesterday’s after-hour trading. We’re going to have to see how much momentum they can create. Yesterday’s numbers were solid to say the least, and it will be hard for bears to continue to justify their glumness by quoting high market valuations.

The market has shown a number of signs of stress this week. Yesterday’s earning news is likely to mix things up anew, instilling investors with the confidence they need to increase their stock exposure.
